Franck Muller has always had a talent for breaking the mold. Known for his irreverent approach to haute horlogerie (see: Crazy Hours ), the self-styled “master of complications” combines his penchant for color with the tonneau-shaped cases in the Vanguard Beach collection. Designed for those who (like Ken) work "just the beach", the Franck Muller Vanguard Beach collection is an ode to carefree holidays and endless possibilities.
Bathed in hues of fiery red, azure and emerald green, this trio of predominantly monochromatic colors blends vibrant hues with the Swiss manufacturer’s signature case shape. Launched in 2014, the Vanguard collection pays homage to its eponymous founder’s love of tonneau-shaped cases while imbuing the silhouette with a casual, sporty aesthetic. Despite being heavy on the wrist, the lack of lugs improves the Vanguard's wear resistance, and the series has won praise from watch enthusiasts and novices alike.
Today, the Vanguard collection provides the ideal canvas for aesthetic and technical exploration, crafted in a variety of materials and featuring different colors and complications.
Here, the funky aesthetic of the Franck Muller Vanguard Beach collection belies its material engineering. The 41mm x 49.5mm case is made from fiberglass composite and features an undulating line pattern designed to mimic the ripples of sand on the beach. Each case is created by melting glass and laminating multiple layers of dyed panels together, balancing lightness and durability; fiberglass composites are only one-fourth as dense as steel and are commonly used in sports equipment.
The light blue dial features white hand-painted Arabic numerals of varying sizes arranged around a central dark blue circle that is engraved with the Frank Muller logo and the word "Beach." There is also a date indicator at 6 o'clock. The Velcro fabric strap is colored to match the case color. Under the skin of the Franck Muller Vanguard Beach watch lies the self-winding movement MVT FM 800-DT with a 42-hour power reserve.
